As a leader, one of your most important tasks is to keep your team motivated and achieving company goals. This can be tough to do when you’re juggling different projects, demanding deadlines and dissimilar personalities.

The good news is that there are some general steps you can take today that will help you to motivate your team tomorrow and in the future. Here are four of them:

Be mindful about meetings.

When it comes to meetings, they often seem like a necessary evil. The reality is that there are times when they can be extremely useful and valuable. However, not every person on your team needs to be in every meeting. Invite only those who really must be there and create and send out an agenda ahead of time. In addition, keep meetings as short and on target as possible.

Make sure goals are clear.

When your employees aren’t clear on goals and expectations, they’re going to flounder and waste a lot of time in the process. Nor will they understand and make progress with priorities. That’s why setting clear goals is so important. When you do, your team members will know what they need to do individually, as well as together, to meet goals. They’ll also be better able to monitor and measure progress, making them more productive in the long run.

Give your team autonomy.

No one likes to be micro-managed. It makes your employees feel like you don’t trust them and are second-guessing their work. The good news is that when your team knows what you expect from them in terms of goals, you won’t have to micro-manage. Simply monitor and check in, but let them take the ball and run with it in terms of the projects they’re working on. They’ll gain more confidence in their abilities and will be more motivated to succeed when they’re able to have some independence.

Take care of your people.

When you have good employees, you want to keep them. The best way to do that is to take care of them. That means offering competitive pay and benefits, building a healthy workplace culture that puts an emphasis on balance, encouraging open communication and collaboration, and making your employees happy that they work for your company. When they feel an overall sense of satisfaction at work, they’ll be far more likely to not only get the job done, but go the extra mile in the process.
